How Often Should I Get An Oil Change?

Jan 5,2024
If you're like most car owners, you're probably wondering "How often should I change my oil?" Well, it depends on the type of car you own and how and where you drive. Here are some tips on how often you need to change your oil and what happens if you wait too long.

WHY DO I NEED TO CHANGE ENGINE OIL?
The oil in your car is vital to keeping your car running smoothly. Its dual purpose is to lubricate all those metal parts and prevent overheating. Over time, your oil ages and becomes less effective. Ignore it for too long and your car risks damage when the oil stops doing its job.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I GET AN OIL CHANGE?
There is no one answer to this question because not all vehicles are the same. Even different conditions can change how often you need to change your oil.

When determining how often to change your engine oil, it's best to start with your owner's manual. Each manufacturer provides recommended maintenance intervals for its vehicles, which include how often to change the oil. This interval can be as short as 3,000 miles, although many manufacturers recommend higher intervals, such as 5,000 miles. This recommended amount is the maximum mileage you should drive between oil changes.

It's also important to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the type of oil used. There is no need to use more expensive synthetic oils unless recommended. While synthetic oil can help extend the life of your engine (because it's less likely to break down than conventional oil), that doesn't mean you can simply extend the time between oil changes by switching. When in doubt, follow the manufacturer's recommendations.

However, there may be situations where an early oil change may be necessary. If you drive in a dirty environment, whether in the city or on unpaved roads, then you may need to change your oil more frequently to keep it clean and ensure it's performing as well as it should. The same is true if you drive in extreme conditions such as high temperatures, freezing temperatures, or frequent heavy loads.

HOW DO I KNOW I NEED AN OIL CHANGE?
The best way to know if your oil needs to be changed is to check your oil. This is easily done by pulling out the dipstick under the hood and looking at the color of the oil. The oil is golden yellow when fresh, but gradually darkens and thickens over time. If your oil is very dark or muddy, it's a sign that your oil needs to be changed. While driving, look for signs of more serious problems, such as overheating or overheating of the engine, reduced performance, or reduced fuel economy.

Figuring out how often you should change your oil isn't difficult. Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations, and remember that it's better to change your oil sooner than to neglect this important part of your car's maintenance.
