Can I drive without an air filter?

Jan 3,2024
An air filter might not seem like an essential component, but it’s more important than one might think. Driving without an air filter is possible, but it’s definitely not a good idea, as this component keeps all kinds of debris out of your climate control system and keeps cabin air fresh and safe to breathe. Here’s why it’s important to have all the necessary filters in your car at all times and make sure that they’re replaced at regular intervals.

WHAT DO THEY DO?
There are multiple air filters in your car, but they all do much the same thing: keep the air clean, whether it's the air you breathe in your car or the air your engine needs to run efficiently. Through the action of the filter, dirt, grime, bugs, dust, leaves, and anything else that might be sucked into your car's system is kept out.

WHAT HAPPENS IF YOU DON’T REPLACE YOUR AIR FILTERS REGULARLY?
The cabin air filter is responsible for handling the air that enters the cabin through the heating and air conditioning system. No one wants to breathe dirty air, so it makes sense to replace this filter at the recommended intervals. If it's dirty, then you may notice reduced air circulation, reduced heating and air conditioning performance, or a musty smell. You may even hear a whistling sound coming from the vents if something larger is stuck.

A dirty engine air filter can cause more serious problems. You may notice reduced fuel economy, strange engine noises, cylinder misfires, or a flashing check engine light. When your engine doesn't get the air it needs, it won't run as expected.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU REPLACE AN AIR FILTER?
Air filters should be replaced at the manufacturer's recommended intervals, but even this may not be frequent enough. If you drive in dusty areas, especially off-road, the filter will get dirty faster and will need to be changed more often than recommended.

If the filter looks dirty with a lot of dust and debris, it's time to replace it. As part of regular vehicle maintenance, checking your filters will ensure they are working properly, keeping the air you and your engine breathe clean.
