What should you do if you have a tire blow out

Dec 26,2023
Tire punctures can be dangerous and always unexpected. Unlike flat tires, which gradually lose air, tires with a flat tire will deflate immediately. If this happens to you, your safety will depend on your ability to remain calm. So, what do you do if you have a flat tire while driving?

Before you think about replacing it with a spare tire, you need to take control of your car. If you encounter this while driving, these tips can help you bring your car to a safe park.

1. HEAD STRAIGHT WITH GENTLE STEERING INPUTS
If your front tire is broken, the front of your car pulls towards the side of the vehicle where the puncture occurred. You may be tempted to pull the steering wheel to correct a turn. Resist the urge to do so, as turning will make it harder for you to control the vehicle and may scare other motorists into reacting dangerously. Instead, hold the steering wheel in the 10 and 2 positions with your hands and try to point straight ahead with subtle movements.

What to do if the rear tire blows out? If this happens, the rear end of the vehicle will rock from side to side. Again, it's important to resist the urge to make a sharp turn. Gentle steering input is used and is designed to keep the vehicle in a straight line.

2. DON’T SLAM ON THE BRAKES
You may need to slam on the brakes to control the vehicle. However, it is important to avoid doing so at this stage. Applying the brakes hard at high speeds and not having proper traction from the four tires can cause the car to skid.

3. GENTLY PRESS THE THROTTLE
Pressing the gas pedal may seem counterintuitive, but a slight acceleration will help maintain the forward momentum of the vehicle.

Keep in mind that the vehicle will slow down on its own faster than usual due to the extra rolling resistance of the flat surface. Maintaining momentum by pressing the throttle can help you regain control of your car as it travels along a predictable path forward.

4. EASE OFF THE THROTTLE AFTER REGAINING CONTROL OF THE CAR
Once you've regained control of the vehicle, take your foot off the accelerator. A flat tire will not roll fast and the vehicle will continue to slow down. Continue to keep the vehicle pointing straight ahead and do not turn the steering wheel too hard.

5. GENTLY STEER THE CAR TO A SAFE PLACE
When the speed of the car slows down to less than 30 mph, direct it to the side of the road and use light braking to bring it to a stop. Make sure you park your car in a place where there is enough space to check for damage and safely put on a spare tire. Turn on your hazard lights, change your tires yourself, or get help.

To avoid punctures, check your tire pressure regularly to make sure it's at a safe level. Also, check your tires for signs of wear and replace them if necessary.

What to do if a flat tire? Follow the above advice and react calmly so that you can better position yourself to safely handle a potentially catastrophic situation.
