What is the difference between a car's air brake and an oil brake

Issue Time:2020-09-16

Air brake: Use the compressed air generated by the air pump to push the brake shoe to achieve the purpose of braking. Air brakes are generally used on large vehicles, mainly shoe brakes, drum brakes, this is due to the large air flow and high pressure, which can act on the brake pump to produce a relatively large stroke;

Oil brake: Use the brake master cylinder to pressurize the hydraulic oil, and the pressure can make the brake shoes work in the brake cylinder. In addition to small cars, oil brakes are mainly used on vehicles with relatively small tonnage. This is due to the small oil pressure flow and the limited stroke of the brake pump.

1. From the structural point of view, the oil brake structure is simpler, and the space required for installation is also small. It only needs the brake master cylinder, the sub-cylinder, the oil cup and the connecting pipeline, and no other auxiliary equipment is needed; the air brake is better than the oil brake It is complicated. In addition to the brake master cylinder, the sub-cylinder, and the brake pipeline, there are also air pumps, air reservoirs, high-pressure controllers, relay valves and other components, which require more installation space, and to ensure safety, the rear brake cylinders are now all It is a dead air brake.

2. From the perspective of braking effect, oil brakes have a slower response speed, soft brakes, and low strength; air brakes have quick response, rough brakes, and greater strength.

Therefore, the general oil brakes are mostly small and medium-sized cars, which are small in size, simple in structure, light in themselves, and do not require too much force. In recent years, there has been a trend toward medium-sized cars (loads below 10 tons, some with less than 19 seats) Medium-sized passenger cars use oil brakes). Air brakes are mostly used on large trucks and buses. There is a lot of space in the vehicle, the braking force required is large, the use distance is long, and the response speed needs to be fast. The increased cost reflected in the entire vehicle accounts for a small proportion.

Therefore, check the thickness of the brake pads or brake shoes of the car regularly. If the thickness is less than the minimum thickness specified by the manufacturer, replace it immediately. When checking the brake pads, the owner should also check the wear of the brake discs or brake drums. If there are dents on the contact surface, the disc or drum should be immediately used to ensure the contact area with the brake pads to increase braking force.
